Land Rover supports “Born Free” initiative.

August 10th, 2009

Gaydon, England - Land Rover is supporting Born Free, an international wildlife charity that is working to prevent the snaring and consumption of wild animal meat. A new film, produced in Kenya by Born Free in partnership with Land Rover, has been created to raise awareness of the illegal “bushmeat” trade in Kenya, in which wild animals are trapped and sold for human consumption.

According to Born Free, rising food prices, crop failures and the global recession are leading to a rise in the illegal meat trade in Kenya. The agency also released figures showing that 7,500 tonnes of illegal meat products enter Britain each year, some disguised as beef, with more than half distributed through wholesalers or local street markets.

The Born Free Foundation uses Land Rovers in Kenya to travel to wildlife areas, where snares are located and removed.

2010 Model Line-up coming

July 31st, 2009

2010 Model Line up coming (as well as a new Gear Box!)

The New York Motor Show will be the launch platform for the 2010 revised Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery 4 models. All of these vehicles will get the latest version of the ZF six-speed automatic gearbox currently in use on these models.

It would appear however that an all-new eight-speed transmission is under development. It is reported to provide fuel economy improvements of over 10%, due to the wider choice of gear ratios, with the real benefits coming in urban driving periods when doing the school bus run and the family shopping.
Word on the street suggests that the stop-start system will not be available for models with automatic transmissions for some time because of design challenges. To compensate the eight-speed box will launch first.

Other changes are in the works including aerodynamics which has to be one of the easiest fixes to make to improve fuel efficiency. As beautiful as they all are, and I love them all, the fact remains that some models, to the lay person, have the aerodynamics of a brick. Even modest changes will provide fuel savings but what will they look like? Lower rolling-resistance tyres are another item on the drawing board for Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery, any lower profiles and we will soon be driving on the rims! And how will they handle off-road conditions, perhaps off-road will be a thing of the past for these models.

It is now no secret that Land Rover sales have been in free fall but that applies to most manufacturers. For Land Rover the declines have been mainly Europe and the USA which should not come as any great surprise. Land Rover appears confident that the new line up in 2010, coupled to a modest economic recovery, or a more stable market, will put them it in a strong position to pick up sales.

At a recent press gathering stressed that ‘in this difficult economic environment Land Rover is very much alive and kicking’, and that it is now seeing some stability for the second half of 2009.

Land Rover has its new small model sitting in the wings, based on the LRX concept vehicle. Land Rover will receive a £27million grant from the UK government for the development of the new baby and will invest a further £400 million to bring it to production.

Any perception of a Tonka Toy version of a Land Rover coming to market has been dispelled by Popham. .’It’s got to be a Range Rover,’ said Popham, making it ‘the smallest, lightest, most efficient Range Rover ever’. The focus is on design, premium quality and desirable features, rather than utility and practicality.

I wonder if it will ever go off-road?

Australian Land Rover market getting strong sales

January 29th, 2009

CHATSWOOD, Australia - With a total of 4,320 retails in 2008, Land Rover achieved its third consecutive year of growth in Australia. In fact, Land Rover was one of the few automotive brands to actually better its 2007 retail result, with a 16.5% increase over the previous year. Land Rover’s performance can be contributed to the continued success of the Discovery 3, still our best selling model in Australia, even after 5 years in the marketplace.

During 2008 the Discovery 3 added to its already impressive list of over 108 awards worldwide, including 16 Down under, winning the prestigious Australia’s Best Cars ‘All Terrain 4WD of the Year’ Award for an unprecedented fourth year in succession. In addition, the Discovery 3 also took out the Carsales Network People’s Choice Awards for the ‘Best Luxury 4WD’ and Overlander Magazine Award for the ‘Best 4WD’ for 2008.

The Defender 110 and Freelander 2 continued to make inroads into the highly competitive SUV segments with increases of 193% and 83.2% A kangaroo from Australia's outback. respectively over the previous year. While at the top end of the market the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Vogue continued their reign as the ultimate status SUVs, the highly refined and frugal TDV8 diesel engine proving to be a popular choice with customers.

General Manger, Roger Jory, said “It’s a testament to Land Rover’s excellent product that the company was able to record such a strong sales result in 2008, especially in the face of the current global economic situation.

Looking forward to 2009, with such a dedicated dealer network and exceptional product lineup, Land Rover is in a great position to minimise the impact of this economic uncertainty and continue to thrive in the Australian market.”
